OUTING CLUB EVENTS 9/21 - 9/27

 

ANNOUNCEMENTS:

*Jennifer Pharr Davis, Hiker Extraordinaire! THIS THURSDAY, 7:30, Brooks-Rogers Recital Hall. Want to learn what it’s like to hike the 2,181 miles of the Appalachian Trail in 46 days? That’s an average of 47 miles a day! In terms an Eph will understand, it’s like hiking from Tyler to Schow over 67 times, every day, for almost two months. Jennifer Pharr Davis is the previous record-holder of fastest AT thru-hike, and she’ll be talking about this and other accomplishments on Thursday.


*Design the Mountain Day Tee Shirt! Design a Mountain Day T-Shirt worn by hundreds of your classmates! Submit a front and back design to the 2014 Mountain Day T-Shirt design competition by midnight, Tuesday ,September 22 in the envelope outside the WOC office door, 2nd floor Pareksy, or digitally to Max, (mwh4) Winning designer gets a free shirt and fame!


*Mountain Day Hike Leaders Wanted: Already psyched for Mountain Day? We are too, and we're looking for excited folks to lead the hikes up Stone Hill, Stoney Ledge and over Mt. Greylock. You must have a wilderness first aid cert, and you must be available for each of the three first Fridays of October. You'll get a free Mountain Day leader tee shirt in return! Email Mia (mcs3) if you would like to volunteer!


*Sign up for the Mountain Day Adventure Race! You’ll get lumberjacked as you battle your way to Stony Ledge for the Mountain Day festivities, earning eternal fame and glory along the way. Teams of four. There will be a $20 entry fee due by Tuesday 9/29 that will be returned to you after the race to make sure you show up. Email Eli (ecm3) with team names and competitors or any questions.


*Equipment Room hours: Equipment room located Paresky level M. Open M-Th 12:30 - 1:30, F 12:00 - 2:00.  Bamboo ($15) or Under Armour ($22) t-shirts can be purchased in the Equipment Room during open hours! [log in to unmask]

THURSDAY:


- Jennifer Pharr Davis: See Announcements. It’ll be cool. No membership necessary.

- Slacklining: Come to the trees between Morgan and Rt. 2 Thursday between 2:30 and 3:30 to learn to slackline with Raja, Annabel, and Galen! No experience necessary, all are welcome!

- Play with axes! Come help prepare the WOC cabin for the colder months and split some wood in Hopkins forest. City dweller? Now’s your chance to learn a valuable life skill. Close-toed shoes required. Meet at 2:30pm at Chapin steps. Shoot an email to Matthew (mbg5) if you’re interested or with questions.

-“Ladies” Night at the Nate Lowe climbing wall (8-9 no cis men, all others welcome. 9-10 all welcome) Towne Field House 8-10pm (must be a current WOC member or bring $10 to join)


- Polar Bear Swim: Want to join the coolest club on campus? Meet at Paresky steps at 9pm. Contact Glen (gg5) with questions.


 FRIDAY:


-Sunrise Hike up Pine Cobble: Meet on Chapin Steps at 6:00 AM.  Dress for the weather, bring a water bottle and a cup for hot drinks.  Return to campus by 8:30AM.  Contact Scott, [log in to unmask]  if you have questions!

SATURDAY:


-Adventures at the Pownal Tubs: Join WOC for a relaxed, fun afternoon of hanging out by Vermont’s famous natural pools leaving campus at 2pm return by 5pm.  This laid back trip is for everybody and anybody, but come prepared to get a little wet! Contact Sarah (sec1) to sign up or ask questions.

-WOC Lean-To Overnight: This is a trip for beginners: no experience necessary and lots of experience gently discouraged. We will be walking off campus (around 3pm) with backpacks full of everything we need for a night at the WOC Lean-To in beautiful Hopkins Forest.  Get outside while it’s still warm and beautiful!  Spend the night outdoors with old friends and make new ones too!  Contact Max (mwh4) to sign up!


SUNDAY:

-Titanic Rock Bouldering: Wanna get out of the field house and on some real rocks? Come tackle some boulder problems with us at Titanic Rock! The large boulder is nestled in a beautiful location, making for an awesome morning excursion/hangout before you begin the Sunday homework grind. After a van ride, it’s only a short walk through the forest to Titanic Rock. We will meet in the equipment room at 8:00am and are aiming to be back on campus by 1:00pm. No gear/experience necessary. -Trail Run to Fall Fest: Excited about Fall Fest in Hopkins Forest? Excited about running as the leaves change color? Join us on a fantastic trail run from Vermont down into Hopkins forest, where we will be greeted with apple cider, music and lumberjack competitions! It will be a moderate 4-6 miles on dirt roads and trails. We’ll meet in the equipment room at 1:30pm. Contact Mia (mcs3) to sign up!
