The High Mountain Institute visit to Williams College, scheduled for 8 pm tonight, has been cancelled. The person who was coming to visit asked me to send you this: The High Mountain Institute (HMI) is located in Leadville, CO (between Breckenridge, Vail and Aspen). Our Apprentice Program is a professional residency in traditional and outdoor education for college graduates. Apprentices participate as students and teachers in support of the HMI semester, a four-month program for high school juniors. The semester combines a rigorous college preparatory curriculum with three multi-week wilderness expeditions and a strong residential life component. In this environment, apprentices gain experience teaching in a classroom setting, leading groups in the wilderness of Colorado and Utah, and acting as advisors in residential life. Apprentices attend a seminar twice weekly in which they participate in discussions about education and their personal teaching experience. We accept seven apprentices a semester in the following subject areas; English, Spanish, History, Wilderness, Science, and Math. If you are interested in being a part of a community that values knowledge, personal growth, and challenge then visit our website www.hminet.org for more information and to view a slide show and movie about the program. We have had a total of eight Williams alums come join us in Leadville (during our 15 years) and we hope to continue this strong relationship. Applications are due February 15th for both the fall and spring semester.
